Template: replying to "not now" or "circle back later"

"Not now" is not a no. A good reply accepts the timing, asks when to come back and then actually comes back. Below are three replies, plus the Sellinger rule that schedules a future follow up. The texts are not measured yet.

The text

Placeholders in square brackets are yours to fill. The wording is ours, not a quote from a customer.
When they give no date
Understood, thank you for telling me. Would it be useful if I checked back in [month], or is another time better for you?
When they give a date
Perfect, I will write again in [month they named]. Until then, nothing from me.
When timing is a budget or project reason
That makes sense. When [the reason they gave] is settled, would you like me to send [one useful thing] so you have it ready?

Why each line is there

Line by line
Thanks for telling meIt treats the answer as useful, not as a failure.
Ask for the dateA date the prospect chose is a promise you can keep.
"Nothing from me"It tells them you will not chase in between.
Offer something usefulA reason to come back that has value to them, not to you.

What it measured

No data yet. Sellinger has not measured results for this exact text, so this page makes no claim about replies, meetings or revenue. Measured campaigns are in the case studies.

When not to use it

  • When the person said stop, unsubscribe or no thanks. That is an opt out, not a timing issue. The contact goes on the suppression list and the agent does not write again.
  • When you will not really follow up. A promised follow up that never happens is worse than no reply.

The rule to add in Sellinger

The rules picker has this rule, in the Buying Signals group, as written in the product:

Rule: not now
Lead says not now or circle back later, schedule a future follow-up
  1. 1

    Step 1

    Open the Rules tab

Open the campaign's configuration drawer and choose the Rules tab.

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Add the rule

Click Templates, search for the rule below and add it, or type it in as your own rule: "Lead says not now or circle back later, schedule a future follow-up"

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Test it

Send yourself a test reply that matches the rule and check that the conversation is flagged for a person.

Common questions

How is "not now" different from an opt out?
An opt out such as STOP or unsubscribe puts the contact on the suppression list. "Not now" keeps the lead open for a later follow up.
How long should I wait?
Use the date the prospect gave. If none, ask them. Do not pick one for them.
Will the agent remember the date?
The rule asks the agent to schedule a follow up. Check the lead's next action in the CRM to see it.
