Template: replying to we already use another vendor

When a prospect says they already work with another vendor, do not attack it and do not push. Acknowledge it, ask one question about what they would still change, and leave a small door open. Below are four versions: a light touch, a curious question, a second source offer, and a graceful exit.

The text

Placeholders in square brackets are yours to fill. The wording is ours, not a quote from a customer.
Version 1: a light touch
Understood, [first name], and good to hear you have it covered. I will not take more of your time. If [vendor or the area] ever stops giving you what you need, I am at [contact]. Thank you for the straight answer.
Version 2: one curious question
Fair enough, [first name]. Out of curiosity, what is the one thing you would change about how it works today? If there is nothing, I will leave it there. If there is something, I may be able to help.
Version 3: a second source
Makes sense, [first name]. Many teams keep their main provider and add us for one narrow job, such as [specific job]. If that is ever useful, I can send a one page outline. If not, no problem.
Version 4: a graceful exit
Thank you for letting me know, [first name]. I will close this out on my side. If your plans change, you know where I am.

Why each line is there

Line by line
Acknowledge the vendorArguing with a choice they already made puts them on the defensive. A calm answer keeps the door open.
Ask one question onlyA single question about what they would change tests for a real gap without a pitch.
Offer a narrow jobA second source for one task is a smaller decision than replacing the incumbent.
Leave a way backContact details and a polite close make it easy to return when the vendor disappoints them.

What it measured

No data yet. Sellinger has not measured results for this exact text, so this page makes no claim about replies, meetings or revenue. Measured campaigns are in the case studies.

For the longer argument on when to ask a question and when to stop, read how to handle we already have a vendor.

When not to use it

  • When they have asked you to stop. Confirm the stop and send nothing else.
  • When the vendor they named is a client or partner of yours. Pass it to a person.
  • When you would run the competitor down. Name no faults you cannot prove.
  • When the reply was an automatic response. Check first whether it is a person.

How to use it in Sellinger

Add this kind of reply to your objection handling in the persona, or paste the version you prefer into the knowledge base so the agent uses your wording. Put the approved wording in a text article in a knowledge base collection and attach it to the persona, so the agent answers from it. If you would rather answer yourself, add a needs attention rule for this kind of reply, and the conversation is flagged for a person. A clear request to stop is handled this way: When a contact replies with an opt out such as STOP or unsubscribe, in English, Bulgarian or German among other forms, the contact goes on the team's suppression list, the agent stops and the lead is closed out. A weak or unclear phrase never writes the permanent record: the agent stops and a person decides.

Common questions

Should I always reply to we already have a vendor?
Yes, once, and briefly. A polite reply keeps the relationship. A second push usually does not.
Should I ask what they pay or when the contract ends?
Not in the first reply. It reads as extracting information. A question about what they would change is gentler.
Should I name the competitor?
Only if the prospect named it first, and never say anything about it you cannot support.
