What is lead nurturing?

Lead nurturing is keeping in touch with people who showed some interest but are not ready to buy, with useful messages until their timing changes. It covers leads who said not now, leads who went quiet and leads who are still researching. Good nurturing gives value each time and stops when the person says stop.

Who needs nurturing?

  • Leads who said not now or gave a date to come back.
  • Leads who replied once and went quiet.
  • People who downloaded something or attended an event but are not in a buying cycle.
  • Deals lost on timing or budget.

What does a good nurture touch look like?

Nurture touches that add value (illustrative)
A useful resourceA short guide that answers a question they asked
A relevant changeA new feature that fixes the reason they paused
A check in on their dateA message in the month they said to come back
An invitationA small session on a topic they care about

Each touch should make sense on its own, and each should be weeks apart, not days. Nurturing that sends the same pitch every week is not nurturing.

How do you measure it?

Count how many nurtured leads come back into an active conversation, and how many of those become opportunities. Opens and clicks say little. A nurture program that brings back a handful of good leads a quarter is often worth more than its volume suggests.

How Sellinger handles it

The nurture and relationships goal templates include goals for value first touches and for re-engaging leads that went quiet or were lost.

Default follow ups before a lead is treated as exhausted: LinkedIn 4, then email; email 5, then WhatsApp; WhatsApp 4, then email; Instagram 4, then email. Default gaps start at 5 days on LinkedIn, 1 to 3 days on email and WhatsApp. Every value can be changed per campaign. When a contact replies with an opt out such as STOP or unsubscribe, in English, Bulgarian or German among other forms, the contact goes on the team's suppression list, the agent stops and the lead is closed out. A weak or unclear phrase never writes the permanent record: the agent stops and a person decides.

Common questions

What is the difference between nurturing and follow up?
A follow up continues a recent conversation. Nurturing keeps a relationship alive over months until the timing is right.
How often should you nurture a lead?
Every few weeks, each time with something useful. Weekly pitches are not nurturing.
When should nurturing stop?
When the person asks you to stop, or after a few touches with no response at all.
