How opt outs and the suppression list work

When a contact replies with an opt out such as STOP or unsubscribe, Sellinger puts them on your team's suppression list, the agent stops and the lead is closed out. Before every send the platform checks that list and refuses the send when the contact is on it.

Before you start

  • Nothing to set up for the automatic part. It is on for every team.
  • If you send cold email, check the unsubscribe line setting on each mailbox.

Steps

  1. 1

    Step 1

    The contact opts out

They reply with a clear opt out such as STOP or unsubscribe. English, Bulgarian and German forms, among others, are recognised.

  2. 2

    Step 2

    The contact is suppressed

They are added to your team's suppression list and the lead is closed out. The agent sends nothing more.

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Every send is checked

Before each send on email, LinkedIn and WhatsApp the platform checks the list. If the contact is on it, or the check cannot be completed, the send is refused.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Unclear phrases go to a person

A weak or unclear phrase never writes the permanent record. The agent stops and a person decides.

What happens next

The lead is closed out, the contact stays on the list, and the agent never writes to them again on the checked channels. A person only steps in when the phrase was unclear.

Good to know

  • Email can carry an unsubscribe line and the standard one click unsubscribe headers. It is a per mailbox setting, so check it on each mailbox.
  • An erasure function takes an email address, phone number or LinkedIn address, anonymizes the matching leads in the workspace and adds the identifiers to the suppression list, so the person cannot be imported and contacted again.
  • A send that you approve by hand goes through the same check.

Common questions

Is opting out in another language handled?
English, Bulgarian and German are covered among other forms. Unclear phrases are escalated to a person.
Can I add contacts to the list myself?
This guide describes what happens automatically. Ask support if you need a contact added by hand.
Does this replace my legal obligations?
No. You remain responsible for who you contact and why. See [outreach rules](/outreach-rules).
