Email template: a follow up after no reply
A good follow up gives the reader a reason to answer that the first email did not. Below are three short versions: a new fact, a smaller ask and a last note. Each one stands on its own, so it still makes sense if the first email was never opened. Sellinger has not measured these exact texts.

The text
Subject: Re: [original subject] Hello [first name], One thing I should have added: [a single fact or example that is true for their kind of company, in one sentence]. Is [the question from the first email] something you handle, or is it someone else on your team? [Name]
Subject: Re: [original subject] Hello [first name], A shorter version of my question: would it help if I sent [one specific thing, such as a one page summary]? A yes or no is enough. [Name]
Subject: Re: [original subject] Hello [first name], I don't want to be a bother, so this is my last note. In one sentence: [restate the offer so the note can be forwarded]. If it is not for you, tell me and I will not write again. [Name]
Why each line is there
| Line | Why it is there |
|---|---|
| A new fact in follow up 1 | A reminder with nothing new gives the reader no reason to act. |
| "Or is it someone else on your team?" | It makes forwarding easy. In the Hotel Pirin study a forwarded last note turned into a confirmed booking. |
| A yes or no is enough | A smaller ask is easier to answer than a meeting request. |
| The last note restates the offer | It has to make sense alone, because it may be read by someone who never saw the earlier emails. |
| Permission to stop | Offering an easy way out reduces annoyed replies. |
What it measured
No data yet. Sellinger has not measured results for this exact text, so this page makes no claim about replies, meetings or revenue. Measured campaigns are in the case studies.
What the case studies do show about follow ups is about their number and their jobs, not these exact words. In the Shelly Group partner emails, 76% of replies came only because of a follow up, and complaints came at the fourth and fifth touch, so that programme capped the sequence at two follow ups. See the partner survey template for the numbers and their data date.
When not to use it
- When the person has replied, even to say no. A reply stops the sequence in Sellinger; do not paste these to a thread that already has one.
- When the person asked you to stop. Opt outs go on the suppression list and the agent does not write again.
- With more than two or three follow ups to a base you want to keep.
How to paste it into Sellinger
- 1
Step 1
Open Flow-Maker
In the campaign's configuration drawer, open Flow-Maker and add the steps you need.
- 2
Step 2
Paste each follow up
Paste the text into the step's instruction box. The box personalizes a pasted message with the lead's data, so read the first sends before you widen.
- 3
Step 3
Set the waits
Set the gap before each step. Sending follows the schedule you set on the account.
Common questions
How many follow ups should I send?
Should the follow up be a reply to the first email?
Does the agent stop when the person answers?
