What is an email sequence?

An email sequence is a planned series of emails sent to one contact over days or weeks, usually a first email and several follow ups. The series stops when the person replies, opts out or reaches the last step. It replaces sending each reminder by hand.

What is in a typical sequence?

Most sequences have between three and six emails. The first one introduces who you are and asks one thing. Each follow up has a reason to exist: a new fact, a shorter version of the ask, or a plain last note. A sequence that repeats the first email word for word teaches the reader to ignore you.

A simple four step shape
1Day 0Say who you are and ask one question
2A few days laterAdd one new fact or example
3About a week laterMake the ask smaller
4About a week laterA short last note that stands on its own

How long should the gaps be?

Early gaps are short because the first email is still fresh, and later gaps grow so you do not look like a machine. Two things matter more than the exact day count: stopping the moment someone replies, and never sending a step to someone who has opted out. Both are checks the software has to make before every send, not habits a person has to remember.

What makes a sequence fail?

  • Sending from one mailbox at a volume the mailbox provider treats as bulk mail.
  • Following up on a reply, because the stop rule was a day late.
  • Four follow ups that all say the same thing.
  • No unsubscribe route, which hurts both trust and deliverability.

How Sellinger handles it

Each email step belongs to a campaign, and the agent writes every email from the lead's own data and the persona you set. A sequence stops on a reply. Default follow up counts are 5 on email, after which the lead moves to WhatsApp, with gaps of 1 to 3 days; every value can be changed per campaign, and a flow in Flow-Maker lets you write the steps yourself.

Every connected account has daily limits that the agent cannot exceed, set per account. LinkedIn defaults are 20 invitations a day and 150 a week. Email defaults to 50 sends a day per mailbox, with an optional warm up that starts at 5 a day and doubles every 3 days up to the limit.

Before every send on email, LinkedIn and WhatsApp, the platform checks the team's suppression list and refuses the send when the contact is on it or when the check cannot be completed. Cold email can carry an unsubscribe line and the standard one click unsubscribe headers (List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post). It is a per mailbox setting.

Common questions

How many emails should be in a sequence?
There is no single right number. Many teams use three to six. In a published Sellinger case study on partner emails, two follow ups were the limit before stop complaints appeared.
Does the sequence stop when someone replies?
Yes. A reply stops the follow ups for that lead, and the agent or a person answers it.
Can I write each step myself?
Yes. A flow lets you set the text and the wait for each step, or you can let the agent write each email.
