Template: LinkedIn follow up messages after no reply

A LinkedIn follow up works when it brings something new: a different angle, a smaller ask or a polite last note. A plain bump such as just checking in gives no reason to answer. Below are three follow ups, about five days apart, that each make sense on their own.

The text

Placeholders in square brackets are yours to fill. The wording is ours, not a quote from a customer.
Follow up 1: a new angle, about 5 days later
[First name], a different angle on my question: [one sentence about a pain common in their industry or role]. Is that on your list this quarter?
Follow up 2: a smaller ask, about 5 days after that
[First name], would a two line summary of how [similar companies] handle [topic] be useful? Happy to send it, no call needed.
Follow up 3: the last note
[First name], I will leave it here so I do not crowd your inbox. If [topic] comes up later, I am easy to find. All the best with [something specific].

Why each line is there

Line by line
A new angle each timeEach message gives a new reason to reply.
A smaller askOffering something light is easier to accept than a meeting.
A last note with an exitEnding politely leaves the door open and avoids annoyance.
About five days apartSpace shows patience and leaves room for busy weeks.

What it measured

Not these exact words. In the Lamothermic campaign, follow ups every five days lifted the reply rate from 17.2% to 30.9%, and across 1,699 follow up recipients 7 first replies were negative. In the Uberwood agency campaign, follow ups added 43% more replies when they brought a new angle, and beyond the second follow up very few people replied.

When not to use it

  • When the person replied, even with a no. A reply stops the follow ups in Sellinger.
  • When they asked you to stop. Opt outs go on the suppression list.
  • After the last note. Wait for a new reason, such as a job change, before writing again.

How to use it in Sellinger

Leave it to the agent, which writes each message from the lead's own data and your persona, or paste this text into a step in Flow-Maker in the campaign's configuration drawer. The step's instruction box personalises a pasted message with the lead's data, so read the first sends before you widen the campaign. Default follow ups before a lead is treated as exhausted: LinkedIn 4, then email; email 5, then WhatsApp; WhatsApp 4, then email; Instagram 4, then email. Default gaps start at 5 days on LinkedIn, 1 to 3 days on email and WhatsApp. Every value can be changed per campaign.

Common questions

How many LinkedIn follow ups should I send?
Two or three is usually enough. Sellinger's LinkedIn default is 4 before a lead is treated as exhausted, and you can change it per campaign.
How long should I wait between follow ups?
About five days is a common gap. Sellinger's default LinkedIn gaps start at 5 days.
Is just checking in a bad follow up?
It gives no reason to reply. Bring a new angle or a smaller ask instead.
