LinkedIn InMail automation: the first touch for people you are not connected to

With InMail on, the Sellinger LinkedIn agent opens a lead it is not connected to with an InMail instead of a connection request. The InMail is free when the person has an Open Profile, spends one Premium credit otherwise, and falls back to a plain connection request when no credit or daily slot is left. It is available to every account and switched on per account.

How the first touch is decided

  1. 1

    1

    Daily limit reached?

The account sends no more InMails than its daily limit. Over the limit, the person gets a plain connection request.

  2. 2

    2

    Open Profile?

An Open Profile person gets an InMail and LinkedIn does not charge a credit.

  3. 3

    3

    A Premium credit left?

Otherwise one Premium credit is spent.

  4. 4

    4

    No credit

The person gets a plain connection request with no note.

Only Premium credits are spent. Sales Navigator credits are not used by the product at the moment. The mode is for people the account is not connected to; connected people get a normal message. It cannot be combined with invites that carry a note, so switching InMail on turns the note setting off.

What the agent writes

  • A subject specific to the person, under 60 characters, no clickbait and no emoji. LinkedIn's own hard limit is 200.
  • A message of 700 characters or less as the target, in three to five short sentences. LinkedIn's hard limit is 1,900.
  • It opens with one concrete thing about the person's work, says briefly why you are reaching out and what is in it for them, and ends with one low friction question.
  • No calendar link in this first message, and no pretending you have spoken before.
  • Plain text only. LinkedIn does not render formatting or attachments.

Who can use it and how to start

  • The account needs LinkedIn Premium or Sales Navigator. Without one the product says so on the account.
  • InMail is off until you switch it on for the account. Set the daily limit there.
  • Credits come from your LinkedIn plan. The balance is read from the account.
  • You connect your own LinkedIn account through a hosted login and Sellinger does not store your LinkedIn password. Each account has a daily invitation limit (default 20, varied by a few each day), a weekly invitation cap (default 150) and a quiet window with no sending (default 01:00 to 08:00 account time). No tool can guarantee that LinkedIn will never restrict an account.

Plan how far your credits go with the InMail credit planner, read the first touch playbook and what the terms mean in the glossary.

Result

Sellinger has very few InMail sends so far, so this page shows no reply rate or any other InMail result. When enough real sends exist, the result will be added with its date and base.

Common questions

Does an InMail cost money?
Not an Open Profile InMail. Other InMails spend one Premium credit from your LinkedIn plan.
What happens when I run out of credits?
The person gets a plain connection request instead.
Can I use InMail and invites with a note together?
No. They are mutually exclusive on an account.
Is InMail better than a connection request?
We have no data to say. We publish no InMail result because there are very few sends.
