LinkedIn InMail as the first touch: configuration and what to measure

This playbook sets up InMail for people you are not connected to: free to Open Profile members, a Premium credit for the rest, a connection request when there is none. It is a configuration, not a result. Sellinger has very few InMail sends, so there is no outcome to report and none is claimed.

When InMail fits

  • People unlikely to accept a cold connection request, such as senior buyers who accept few invitations.
  • Leads you can reach on LinkedIn only, with a reason to write that fits a message of a few sentences.
  • An account with Premium or Sales Navigator and a credit balance you can see.

The configuration

  1. 1

    Setup

Switch InMail on for the account

Set the daily limit. Start below the default of 10 while you read the first messages.

  2. 2

    Setup

    Use approval mode

Read the first ten InMails before the rest go. A subject line is public to the person.

  3. 3

    Message

One concrete detail, one reason, one question

The agent opens with a specific thing about the person's work, says briefly what is in it for them and ends with one low friction question. No calendar link in the first message.

  4. 4

    Fallback

    Connection request

Over the daily limit or out of credits, the person gets a plain connection request with no note.

Open Profile people cost no credit, so they are the cheapest place to start. The credit planner shows how a list splits between free InMails, paid InMails and connection requests.

What to measure

  • Replies per InMail sent, counted per person and not per message.
  • The same measure on a matched list that got a connection request instead.
  • Credits spent per reply.
  • Keep both lists the same size and the same audience. The rate calculator gives a 95% range so you do not read noise as a result.

The result

Sellinger has very few InMail sends so far, so this page shows no reply rate or any other InMail result. When enough real sends exist, the result will be added with its date and base.

Common questions

Should I send an InMail or an invite first?
We have no data to say which is better. Run both on matched lists and compare reply rates per person.
Does it need Sales Navigator?
It needs Premium or Sales Navigator on the account. The product spends Premium credits only.

Sources and method

A playbook here is a configuration that ran, with the outcome it produced and the base of every number. It is not a template promise: your audience and offer decide your own rates. Routing and message limits from backend/app/services/linkedin_inmail.py, checked 19 October 2026. This playbook has no outcome yet, by design.
