What is pipeline coverage?

Pipeline coverage is the value of open pipeline for a period divided by the revenue target for that period. A coverage of 3 means there is three times as much pipeline as the target. The right ratio depends on your own win rate: a team that wins one deal in four needs more coverage than one that wins one in two.

How do you calculate it?

Pipeline coverage = open pipeline value for the period / target for the period. An example with made up numbers: a quarterly target of 200,000 and open opportunities worth 500,000 closing this quarter give a coverage of 2.5.

What ratio do you need?

Work it out from your own history rather than a rule of thumb. If your win rate by value is 25%, you need about four times the target in pipeline to expect to hit it, before slippage. If deals often slip into the next quarter, you need more. That is why coverage and win rate belong on the same page.

What makes coverage misleading?

  • Old deals that nobody has closed out inflate the number.
  • Deals with a close date pushed to the end of the quarter by default.
  • Values guessed early and never updated.
  • Counting pipeline from people who replied once and never again.

How Sellinger handles it

Outbound is how most teams fill coverage gaps. Sellinger's agents book first meetings. Sellinger has a built in CRM with contacts, deals and the full conversation history across channels, and a two way sync with HubSpot. Sellinger does not forecast revenue or compute coverage.

Common questions

Is 3x coverage a rule?
It is a common rule of thumb, not a law. Your own win rate and slippage decide the right number.
Should coverage use weighted pipeline?
Some teams use weighted values by stage. Pick one method and use it consistently.
How do you raise coverage fast?
Create new opportunities from target accounts and revive deals lost on timing. Avoid inflating values.
