What is a B2B lead?

A B2B lead is a person at another company who might buy from you, together with what you know about them: name, role, company and a way to reach them. It becomes a prospect once they show interest, and a customer once they buy.

What types of B2B lead are there?

Common lead types
Outbound leadYou find them on a list or a searchA first message they did not ask for
Inbound leadThey contact you or fill in a formA fast, relevant answer
Signal based leadThey did something that suggests interest, such as engaging a competitor's postA message that fits the signal
Referral leadSomeone introduces themA warm message that names the referrer

What makes a lead worth contacting?

A lead needs two things: a fit with your ideal customer, and a way to reach them. Fit means the right industry, size and role. Reach means a verified email, a LinkedIn profile or a phone number. A lead with fit but no reach needs enrichment. A lead with reach but no fit wastes sends and can hurt your sender reputation.

How do you qualify one?

  • Check the role: does this person decide, influence or only use?
  • Check the company: size, industry and location against your ideal customer.
  • Check the timing: any signal that now is a good moment.
  • Check the history: have you or a colleague contacted them before?

How Sellinger handles it

Sellinger works with leads from a database of 700M+ contacts, LinkedIn searches, CSV files, HubSpot and intent signals, and keeps every lead in a built in CRM with its conversation history across channels. A lead needs a team, an agent and one channel account before an agent contacts it.

Leads already in your team are not added twice, and a lead you discard stays in your history. See lead qualification and lead scoring.

Common questions

What is the difference between a lead and a prospect?
A lead is anyone who might buy. A prospect is a lead that has been checked and fits. Many teams use the words for the same thing.
Where do B2B leads come from?
From databases, LinkedIn searches, your own website, ads, events and referrals.
How many leads do I need?
It depends on your reply and meeting rates. Work backwards from the number of meetings you need.
