What is a decision maker in B2B sales?

In B2B sales, a decision maker is the person who can approve a purchase: they control the budget or have the authority to say yes. They are rarely the only person involved. Users, influencers and checkers such as finance or IT shape the decision, and reaching the decision maker too early or alone can backfire.

How do you find the decision maker?

Start with the title that owns the result you change, not the most senior person. A head of operations owns delivery costs; the CEO of a large company does not read cold email about them. When unsure, ask a colleague of theirs who looks after the topic: a referral inside the account is often the warmest route. How to find decision makers covers the search side.

How should you write to one?

  • Lead with a result they are measured on, in one line.
  • Keep it short; decision makers skim.
  • Ask one question they can answer quickly.
  • Mention a colleague only if you really spoke with them.

How Sellinger handles it

Search people by title and company over a database of 700M+ contacts, then let the agent write to each one. A campaign can run in approval mode, where every message waits for a person to approve it, or send automatically. A person can take over any conversation, and the agent stops on its own when it cannot answer, for example a price it has no answer for.

Common questions

Should I always write to the CEO?
Only in small companies, where the CEO owns most decisions. In larger ones, write to the person who owns the result.
What if the decision maker sends me to someone else?
That is a good outcome. Write to that person and mention who sent you.
Is a decision maker the same as an economic buyer?
Usually yes. MEDDIC calls the person with budget authority the economic buyer.
