Template: replying to is there a free trial

When a prospect asks about a free trial, answer yes or no in the first word, then say what the trial includes, how long it lasts and what happens after. Hiding the answer behind a demo request costs you the reply. Below are three versions: you have a trial, you do not, and you offer a guided pilot instead.

The text

Placeholders in square brackets are yours to fill. The wording is ours, not a quote from a customer.
Version 1: you have a free trial
Yes, [first name]. You get [length] free, with [what is included], and [card needed or no card]. After that it is [price], and you can cancel any time. Want me to send the link, or set it up with you in 15 minutes?
Version 2: you have no trial
No free trial, [first name], but [what you offer instead, such as a money back period, a paid month you can stop, or a free sample]. Here is what that looks like: [one line]. Would that work for you?
Version 3: a guided pilot
Not a self serve trial, [first name], but we can run a short pilot on [scope] for [length], and you decide at the end whether to continue. It costs [price or nothing]. Shall I send the outline?

Why each line is there

Line by line
Yes or no firstIt is a yes or no question. Answering it first earns the right to say more.
Length and what is includedA trial with no limits stated sounds like a trap.
What it costs afterwardsPeople ask about price next. Say it before they do.
Cancel any time, only if trueA promise you can keep removes the main fear.
A next stepA link or 15 minutes turns interest into action.

When not to use it

How to use it in Sellinger

Sellinger's own terms, as an example of the structure: 30 days free on messaging modules and bundles, no card. Usage modules (enrichment) start with a $10 credit. Put your real trial terms in the knowledge base so the agent quotes them exactly, and add a needs attention rule for any pricing question you want a person to answer. Put the approved wording in a text article in a knowledge base collection and attach it to the persona, so the agent answers from it. If you would rather answer yourself, add a needs attention rule for this kind of reply, and the conversation is flagged for a person.

Common questions

Should I always offer a free trial?
It depends on your product and cost to serve. If you do not offer one, say so plainly and offer something else.
Should I ask for a card?
State whether you do. Hiding it loses trust, and saying it either way is better than leaving it out.
What if they ask for a longer trial?
Decide your rule in advance and have a person approve exceptions.
