What is SPIN selling?

SPIN selling is a questioning method from Neil Rackham's book of the same name. It groups sales questions into four kinds: Situation, Problem, Implication and Need payoff. The idea is that buyers convince themselves when the questions help them see the cost of a problem and the value of solving it.

What are the four kinds of question?

SPIN questions with B2B examples
SituationUnderstand the factsHow do new leads reach your team today?
ProblemFind a difficultyWhere do leads get lost between marketing and sales?
ImplicationExplore the costWhat happens to a lead that waits two days for an answer?
Need payoffLet the buyer state the valueIf every lead got an answer within the hour, what would that change?

How does SPIN apply to outreach?

A first cold message has room for one question, and it should usually be a problem question about something visible, not a situation question the buyer finds tedious. Implication and need payoff questions fit the reply and the first call, once the buyer has said a problem exists. Asking an implication question in the first message often reads as pushy.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Too many situation questions, which bore the buyer and could have been answered by research.
  • Implication questions that exaggerate the problem.
  • Using the four kinds as a rigid order instead of following the conversation.

How Sellinger handles it

The agent researches each prospect before writing, which removes the need for most situation questions, and asks one question per message. You can write the questions you want it to use into the agent's rules or the persona.

The agent researches each prospect, writes the first message and every follow up, answers the replies and books the meeting on your calendar. See observation openers beat questions for what worked on our own LinkedIn outbound.
