What is a discovery call?
A discovery call is the first real conversation between a seller and a prospect, where the seller learns the buyer's situation, problem and goals, and both sides decide whether it is worth continuing. It is mostly listening. A good discovery call ends with a clear next step or an honest no, not with a pitch.

How should a discovery call be structured?
| Minutes | Part | Aim |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 3 | Agenda | Agree what the call is for and how long it takes |
| 3 to 18 | Their situation | How things work today and what is hard |
| 18 to 24 | Impact | What the problem costs and what changes if it is solved |
| 24 to 28 | Fit | Say honestly whether you can help |
| 28 to 30 | Next step | Agree the next step with a date, or close it |
What questions work?
- How do you handle this today?
- What made you take this call now?
- What have you tried, and what happened?
- Who else cares about this, and what do they need to see?
- If nothing changes for six months, what happens?
What are the common mistakes?
Talking more than listening. Demoing before understanding. Asking questions you could have answered with ten minutes of research. And ending without a next step, which turns a good call into a deal that drifts. See SPIN selling and BANT for two ways to structure the questions.
How Sellinger handles it
The agent books the discovery call after the prospect says yes, on your calendar, and the conversation that led to it is saved. Sellinger has a built in CRM with contacts, deals and the full conversation history across channels, and a two way sync with HubSpot. A person runs the call.
The founder led LinkedIn discovery calls playbook shows how one founder booked calls framed as asking for the person's perspective.
