What is BANT in sales?

BANT is a lead qualification framework that checks four things: Budget, Authority, Need and Timeline. A lead that has money for the purchase, includes a person who can decide, has a real problem and a time frame is worth a sales conversation. It is simple, which is its strength and its weakness.

What do the four letters mean?

BANT with example questions
BudgetCan they pay for it?How do you usually fund tools like this?
AuthorityWho decides?Who else would want a say in this?
NeedIs the problem real? What happens if this stays as it is for six months?
TimelineWhen will they act?Is there a date this needs to work by?

Where does BANT fall short?

It was built for a time when the seller held the information and the buyer came to learn. Today buyers research first, and asking about budget in the first call can end it. Budget is also often created once the need is clear, so a lead with no budget today can still be the best lead of the quarter. Many teams use BANT as a checklist for the end of discovery, not as a script for the start.

How does BANT compare with other frameworks?

MEDDIC adds the buyer's metrics and decision process, which suits complex deals. CHAMP puts challenges first and budget later. SPIN selling is a questioning method rather than a checklist. Pick the one your team will actually use.

How Sellinger handles it

You can write qualification questions into the agent's rules, for example to ask about timing and team size before offering a call, and to hand any budget or pricing question to a person. The agent asks one question at a time rather than running a checklist.

A campaign can run in approval mode, where every message waits for a person to approve it, or send automatically. A person can take over any conversation, and the agent stops on its own when it cannot answer, for example a price it has no answer for. See lead qualification and how to qualify leads with an AI SDR.

Common questions

Is BANT still used?
Yes, often as a quick check before handing a lead to an account executive. Most teams no longer use it as an opening script.
Should an AI agent ask about budget?
Usually not in the first messages. Let the agent ask about need and timing, and leave budget to a person.
What is the difference between BANT and an ICP?
An ICP describes which companies to target. BANT checks whether one lead, already in conversation, is ready to buy.
