What is speed to lead?
Speed to lead is the time between a person asking for contact, by filling a form or sending a message, and your first real reply. It is measured in minutes, usually as a median. It matters most for inbound leads who are comparing options at that moment.

How do you measure speed to lead?
Take the timestamp of the request and the timestamp of the first human or agent reply, and subtract. Report the median, not the average, because one lead that waited a weekend skews the average. Count only real replies. An automatic confirmation email does not stop the clock.
| Lead | Request | First reply | Wait |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 09:00 | 09:04 | 4 min |
| B | 11:30 | 11:31 | 1 min |
| C | 17:55 | next day 09:10 | 15 h 15 min |
Example: the median wait is 4 minutes, the average is more than 5 hours. The median describes the typical lead.
When does speed matter, and when does it not?
Speed decides inbound, where the person is looking now. It matters less for cold outreach, where nobody is waiting. In Sellinger's own outbound data, cutting the agents' reply time from about 19 minutes to about 2 did not raise meetings per conversation. Answering fast is the minimum, not the lever. Lists and message quality moved results more.
How Sellinger handles it
Two things are documented. First, ad form leads are fetched quickly: Facebook lead form leads every 60 seconds and Google Ads leads every 300 seconds, then contacted by the campaign. The goal library has a goal to respond to every inbound inquiry within 5 minutes. Second, measured medians: in two published studies the agent answered a prospect in a median of 2.3 to 2.5 minutes, and at Hotel Pirin, a related party, the reservations agent answered guests in a median of 41 seconds.
These are medians from those campaigns, not a promise for yours. See speed to lead for ad leads and inbound lead qualification.
