What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant call tools and read data in another system through one common interface. For sales it means you can ask Claude or ChatGPT about your pipeline, and it fetches the answer from your sales software.

How does MCP work?

There are two sides. A server exposes a list of tools, each with a name and the inputs it takes. A client, such as Claude or ChatGPT, reads that list, decides which tool answers your question, calls it and uses the result in its reply. You do not write the call. You write the request in plain language.

The value is that one connector replaces a custom integration per assistant. Connect once and any client that speaks MCP can use the tools.

What does a request look like in practice?

Which leads are hot this week?get_hot_leadsA short list with the signals behind each
What is waiting for my approval?list_approvalsThe queued messages

Tool names are from Sellinger's hosted connector. The questions are examples.

Writing tools need care. A tool that sends a message or changes a campaign should ask for confirmation, and your sales software should keep its own limits in force.

How Sellinger handles it

Sellinger runs a hosted MCP connector for Claude and ChatGPT. It has 43 tools, including listing and searching leads, reading a conversation, hot leads, approvals (list, approve, reject, regenerate a draft), creating and updating campaigns, people search and enrichment, personas with version history, and credit balances. You connect it in four clicks, and four saved workflows come with it.

The same limits apply as in the app: the suppression check before a send and the daily caps on each account. See the MCP page and the recipes, for example the weekly pipeline review.

Common questions

Is MCP only for Claude?
No. It is an open standard, and other assistants and tools can use it. Sellinger's connector works with Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client.
Is MCP the same as an API?
An API is made for programs. MCP describes tools so that an AI model can pick and call them on its own.
Can the assistant send messages for me?
Sellinger exposes a send message tool. What it may send is still limited by your approval mode, suppression list and daily caps.
