What is an AI sales agent?
An AI sales agent is software that does the work of a sales development rep on its own: it researches each prospect, writes the first message and the follow ups, answers replies and books the meeting. A person sets the goal and the rules, and can step in at any point.

What does an AI sales agent actually do?
The job is the same as a human rep's, split into steps. The agent picks a prospect from a list, reads what is public about them, writes a message in their language, sends it from a connected account, waits, follows up if there is silence, reads the reply and decides what to say next. The last step is a booked call on a calendar. The agent is also called an AI SDR or an AI BDR, depending on the vendor.
It is not the same as a chatbot. A chatbot waits for someone to arrive on a page. An AI sales agent starts conversations with people who did not ask, and it keeps state across days: who it wrote to, what they said, when to try again.
What are the parts of an agent?
- A goal, such as book a call or qualify inbound interest.
- A persona: who it writes as, in what tone, about what product.
- Rules: what to answer, what to leave alone, when to stop.
- Channel accounts it sends from, with daily limits.
- A hand over path to a person.
Where do AI sales agents go wrong?
Three places. They write generic messages because the list or the product description was thin. They answer things they should have passed to a person, such as a price they were not given. And they run at a volume the channel does not tolerate. Each is a configuration problem you can see in the conversation log, which is why a readable log and an approval step matter more than the model behind it.
How Sellinger handles it
The agent researches each prospect, writes the first message and every follow up, answers the replies and books the meeting on your calendar. A campaign can run in approval mode, where every message waits for a person, or send automatically. A campaign can run in approval mode, where every message waits for a person to approve it, or send automatically. A person can take over any conversation, and the agent stops on its own when it cannot answer, for example a price it has no answer for.
One agent works one connected account on one channel: LinkedIn, email, WhatsApp, Instagram or live chat. See the LinkedIn agent and the email agent, or read AI SDR vs human SDR for what people still do better.
