What is an MCP server?

An MCP server is a program that exposes a tool's data and actions to an AI assistant through the Model Context Protocol. The assistant, such as Claude or ChatGPT, can then read records and take steps in that tool, in plain language, without custom code for each task.

How is an MCP server different from an API?

An API is built for programmers. Someone writes code that calls an endpoint. An MCP server describes its tools in a way an AI assistant can read, so the assistant decides which tool to call from what you ask. The server often sits on top of the same API, with permissions and a list of allowed actions.

What can you do with one?

  • Ask for a summary of last week's replies.
  • Find leads that match a description and add them to a campaign.
  • Review what is waiting for approval and approve it.
  • Check which accounts need to be reconnected.

What should you check first?

Look at which actions the server allows, whether it can write or only read, and how access is granted and revoked. A server that can send messages deserves the same controls as a person who can.

How Sellinger handles it

Sellinger has a hosted MCP connector with 43 tools for Claude and ChatGPT. They cover the same work you do in the app: find and manage leads, read conversations, check campaigns, handle approvals. Ready made prompts are in the MCP recipes, and the MCP page explains how to connect.

Sellinger also has a REST API with webhooks, available from the Full Stack bundle up. The MCP connector does not replace it. They serve different callers.

Common questions

Is MCP only for Claude?
No. It is an open protocol that other assistants support. Sellinger's connector is built for Claude and ChatGPT.
Can an AI assistant send messages through MCP?
Only if the server exposes a send action. Campaigns can still run in approval mode, so a person reviews what goes out.
Do I need to code to use it?
No. You connect the server in the assistant's settings and then talk to it.
