What is a champion in sales?
In sales, a champion is a person inside the buying company who wants your solution, has influence, and actively argues for it when you are not in the room. A friendly contact who likes talking to you is not a champion unless they push the deal forward internally. Most complex deals need one, and lose momentum when they leave.

How do you tell a champion from a friendly contact?
| Sign | Friendly contact | Champion |
|---|---|---|
| Shares internal information | Rarely | Tells you who decides and what they worry about |
| Introduces colleagues | Only when asked | Brings people in themselves |
| Benefits personally | Not clearly | The outcome helps their goals or career |
| Spends their own time | Answers your questions | Builds the internal case with you |
How do you help a champion?
Give them what they need to sell inside: a short summary in their language, the numbers their manager will ask for, answers to the objections they expect. Ask how decisions are made and what has blocked similar projects before. A champion who looks good in front of their boss stays a champion.
What happens when a champion leaves?
The deal or the account is at risk. Act within a week: meet the person who now owns the relationship, and congratulate the departing champion in their new job, where the same need may exist. LinkedIn outreach for customer success managers covers both steps.
