What is an account executive in sales?

An account executive, or AE, is the seller who owns a deal from the first real meeting to the signed contract: discovery, demos, proposals, negotiation and closing. In many teams an SDR or BDR books the first meeting and hands it to the AE. In smaller teams the AE also prospects their own pipeline.

See SDR vs BDR for the difference between the two prospecting roles.

What makes a good hand off from SDR to AE?

  • A short note: who the person is, what they said and why they agreed to meet.
  • The full conversation, not a summary of it.
  • A meeting the AE is prepared for, with no surprises about fit.
  • Agreement on what counts as a qualified meeting, so the AE does not reject half of them.

Should AEs prospect?

In many teams, yes, on a short list of accounts they can close. AEs know the product and the deal, so their first messages carry more credibility. LinkedIn outreach for account executives describes a routine.

How Sellinger handles it

The agent books the first meeting on the AE's calendar. Sellinger has a built in CRM with contacts, deals and the full conversation history across channels, and a two way sync with HubSpot, so the AE can read every message before the call. A campaign can run in approval mode, where every message waits for a person to approve it, or send automatically. A person can take over any conversation, and the agent stops on its own when it cannot answer, for example a price it has no answer for.

Common questions

Is an account executive a manager?
No. It is a selling role. Account executives can be junior or senior depending on deal size.
What is the difference between an AE and an account manager?
An AE wins new business. An account manager looks after existing customers and expansion.
Can an AI agent replace an AE?
No. The agent books meetings; a person runs discovery, proposals and negotiation.
