Lead generation for consultants and solo experts: a peer's question, not a pitch

A consultant sells on expertise, so the outreach must sound like the expert and ask a real question. The closest published study is a solo founder whose Sellinger agent wrote as him on LinkedIn, asked for people's perspective and sent a booking link after a yes: 935 conversations, 19 calls booked, 10 documented as held. That was customer discovery, not a sales result. Sellinger has no published consultant case study.

Who has this job

Independent consultants, fractional executives, coaches and one person advisory firms. Referrals fill the calendar until they do not, and the owner has no time to prospect while delivering. In the customer base, consulting is one of the larger groups of what teams sell: 17 of 322 customer teams, 3 of them paying. The sample is small, so read it as a pattern and not a market size.

How the closest study ran

  1. 1

    Day 0

    A connection note

One compliment on a profile detail and the single offer that fits them, often "I'd value your perspective".

  2. 2

    After accept

    One question

About their work, in their words.

  3. 3

    Every 5 to 7 days

    A narrower bump

Each follow up narrows the question.

  4. 4

    After a yes

    A 15 minute call

The booking link goes out only after the person says yes, framed as a feedback chat.

The agent wrote as the founder, "a peer and an expert, not a salesperson". Sixteen of the 19 bookings came from lists of people already engaging with relevant posts, and title and keyword searches booked 1 call in 225 conversations. The calls were feedback calls for products still being built. No revenue is visible in the data and none is claimed. Read the ShortVibe case study.

A second study fits experts who sell to other advisors: a wealth advisor referral network where a peer opener with no pitch and no link reached 9,808 professionals, 44.8% replied and 95 calls were booked. See the peer opener playbook.

Setting it up as a one person firm

  • Connect your own LinkedIn profile. The agent writes as you, so put your tone, your boundaries and the one question you ask in the persona.
  • Start in approval mode and read the first ten messages. A consultant's name is the product.
  • Put your fees, availability and what you do not do in the knowledge base so the agent never invents them. Use the needs attention rules for price talk.
  • Keep the daily limit low. LinkedIn defaults are 20 invitations a day and 150 a week, and a niche list rarely needs more.

What is and is not shown

No Sellinger customer in the consulting group has a published case study. The numbers above are from a solo founder and a referral network, labelled as such. They show how the method behaves with expert led outreach. They are not a promise for your market.

Common questions

Will it sound like me?
The persona sets your tone, and approval mode lets you read each message before it goes. The ShortVibe agent wrote as the founder and booked 19 calls, but that is one study.
Can it book discovery calls on my calendar?
It can offer times and a booking link from a connected Cal.com or Calendly.
Is there a consultant case study?
No. The closest are a solo founder's discovery campaign and a referral network of financial advisors.
