AI SDR for law firms: business development that keeps legal advice with lawyers
A business law firm can use an AI SDR to open conversations with in house counsel, founders and finance leads, as long as the messages stay inside its conduct rules and never give legal advice. The agent asks one question about a matter type you handle, follows up, and hands every reply that touches a legal issue to a lawyer.

Why outbound in law firms is different
Law firm marketing is regulated by the profession, and the rules differ by country and by bar or law society. Many place limits on soliciting clients directly, and most require that marketing is not false or misleading. Before any outbound campaign, a partner should check the firm's own rules and decide what the agent may say.
Clients also buy legal services on reputation and referral. A cold message rarely wins a matter on its own. What it can do is put a specialist in front of someone at the moment a matter type becomes relevant: a funding round, an expansion abroad, a new regulation in their sector.
| Who | What they care about | How they tend to buy |
|---|---|---|
| General counsel or in house lawyer | Specialist depth, predictable fees, responsiveness | Uses a panel of firms, adds a firm for a gap or a conflict |
| Founder or CEO of a growing company | Getting the deal or the hire done safely and quickly | Picks on referral and one good conversation |
| Finance director | Cost control, contracts, disputes that affect cash | Involved in panel reviews and fee arrangements |
What an AI SDR does for law firms
- Builds lists of in house counsel, founders and finance leads in the sectors and countries the firm serves.
- Watches LinkedIn for events that create legal work, such as a Funding Announcement or a New Office abroad.
- Writes as a named lawyer, with a question about one matter type, and no legal opinion.
- Follows up sparingly, with one useful item such as an article the firm published on a new rule.
- Hands every reply that describes a situation to a lawyer, who also runs the conflict check.
An example sequence for law firms
- 1
Day 0
LinkedIn connection request
From the specialist lawyer's own profile, with no note.
- 2
On accept
One question about a matter type
For example, how they handle employment contracts in a new country.
- 3
Day 10
Follow up with something useful
A link to one note the firm published on a rule that affects their sector.
- 4
Day 25
Email to the same person
A short note offering a call on that one topic, with a clear way to say no.
- 5
Any reply
Hand to the lawyer
The lawyer runs a conflict check before any detail is discussed.
Hi Anna, thanks for connecting. You opened a team in [country] this year. When you hire there, do you use your home contract templates, or does someone review them locally? I work on cross border employment for [sector] companies. [Name], [Firm]
What stays with a person
- All legal advice, opinions and comments on a described situation.
- Conflict checks and engagement terms, before any detail of a matter is discussed.
- Fee quotes and estimates.
- Anything confidential, privileged or involving a dispute.
- Replies from people who are clearly individuals rather than businesses, where conduct rules may differ.
Channels that fit law firms
| Channel | When it fits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| In house counsel and founders, from a named lawyer's profile | Check your conduct rules on direct approaches before you start | |
| Follow ups with a useful note, and finance leads | Keep it free of legal opinion and of claims about outcomes | |
| Live chat | Visitors asking whether the firm handles a matter | Collect contact details and the matter type only, then hand over |
The closest published evidence
The nearest published campaign is Green Shield Logistics, which sold a regulated service with formal letters built around each buyer's own regulation. Named heads of quality, ESG, procurement and logistics replied at 8.2%, almost four times the 2.2% of shared inboxes, and 11 replies forwarded the letter to the responsible colleague. A formal tone and a named owner worked in a cautious field.
The wealth advisor referral network showed that a peer tone with no pitch earns replies in a trust based profession: 44.8% of 9,808 professionals messaged replied.
Rules to check before you start
Professional conduct rules on solicitation and advertising are set by each bar, law society or regulator, and some differ for approaches to individuals versus businesses. Have a partner sign off the campaign, and keep the approval switch on. This is not legal advice.
Email law applies as well; see is cold email legal. When a contact replies with an opt out such as STOP or unsubscribe, in English, Bulgarian or German among other forms, the contact goes on the team's suppression list, the agent stops and the lead is closed out. A weak or unclear phrase never writes the permanent record: the agent stops and a person decides.
How to start with Sellinger
- Choose one practice area and one buyer type, such as employment law for companies opening abroad.
- Write the persona in the voice of the lawyer who will take the call, with matters described only as the firm describes them publicly.
- Write the hand over rules: any described situation, any dispute, any fee question goes to a person.
- Keep approval mode on for the whole campaign. A campaign can run in approval mode, where every message waits for a person to approve it, or send automatically. A person can take over any conversation, and the agent stops on its own when it cannot answer, for example a price it has no answer for.
