Template: messaging people who engage with a competitor's posts

People who engage with a competitor's posts care about the problem you both solve, and some are evaluating options. A good message never mentions or criticises the competitor. It talks about the problem and asks one question. Check the profile first, because many engagers are peers, vendors or job seekers.

The text

Placeholders in square brackets are yours to fill. The wording is ours, not a quote from a customer.
Version 1: the problem, not the vendor
Hi [first name], I noticed you follow the conversation around [problem]. How is [Company] handling it at the moment?
Version 2: a specific angle
Hi [first name], one thing I keep hearing from [role] about [problem] is [specific point]. Does that match what you see?
Version 3: an easy question
Hi [first name], are you looking at options for [problem] this year, or is it settled for now?

Why each line is there

Line by line
No competitor nameNaming or criticising a competitor looks petty and can backfire.
The problem firstTheir interest is in the problem, so start there.
Settled for nowGives an easy, honest answer if they are happy with their supplier.
Check the profileAvoids writing to the competitor's own staff and partners.

What it measured

Not these exact words. In the Lamothermic campaign, 141 people engaging with competitor foundries' pages were messaged; 58.2% replied and 6 became buyer side outcomes (4.3%). Intent signal lists replied twice as often, but 57% of those replies came from recruiters, vendors and peers, so check fit before you write.

When not to use it

  • When the engager works for the competitor or a partner of theirs.
  • When you would compare yourself with the competitor in the first message.
  • When the engagement is old; the interest may have passed.

How to use it in Sellinger

Leave it to the agent, which writes each message from the lead's own data and your persona, or paste this text into a step in Flow-Maker in the campaign's configuration drawer. The step's instruction box personalises a pasted message with the lead's data, so read the first sends before you widen the campaign. Competitor engagers and commenters are two of the intent signal templates in Sellinger, which has intent signals on LinkedIn with 26 ready made signal templates in 8 categories, included with every bundle.
