What is unsubscribe rate?
Unsubscribe rate is the share of delivered emails that led the recipient to opt out, by an unsubscribe link, a one click unsubscribe button or a reply asking to stop. A steady low rate is normal. A rising rate means the list, the message or the frequency is wrong, and it often comes before a rise in spam complaints.

How do you calculate it?
Unsubscribe rate = opt outs / emails delivered x 100, for a campaign or a period. An example with made up numbers: 1,000 delivered, 4 opt outs, a rate of 0.4%. In cold outreach, count reply opt outs such as please remove me as well as link clicks.
What does a rising rate tell you?
| Pattern | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| High on the first message | Wrong list or wrong audience | Rebuild the list |
| Rising on later follow ups | Too many touches | Shorten the sequence |
| Spikes after a change | A new message that misses | Go back and test |
Is an unsubscribe bad?
Less bad than the alternative. A person who unsubscribes used the route you gave them. A person who could not find one presses the spam button instead, which damages your sender reputation. Make opting out easy. See spam complaint rate.
How Sellinger handles it
When a contact replies with an opt out such as STOP or unsubscribe, in English, Bulgarian or German among other forms, the contact goes on the team's suppression list, the agent stops and the lead is closed out. A weak or unclear phrase never writes the permanent record: the agent stops and a person decides. Cold email can carry an unsubscribe line and the standard one click unsubscribe headers (List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post). It is a per mailbox setting.
